Top Tourist Spots in Muscat
Muscat is full of historic buildings. These include the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, built by the Portuguese in the 1580s to guard the harbour. Mutrah fort at the eastern end of the harbour was built at the same time. Visitors aren't allowed to enter the forts, as they are still being used for military purposes, but they can take pictures.
More modern attractions are provided by the Grand Mosque, which is the third largest in the world, and the Royal Opera House. This latter building has developed a worldwide reputation as a cultural powerhouse.
