Safari Blue

Fumba, the starting point of Safari Blue, is an apt destination for the exploration of Menai Bay. It is home to gorgeous, uninhabited islets and features crystal-clear turquoise waters that are often visited by bottlenose and hump-back dolphins. In fact, dolphins are sighted on approximately 90% of trips. On arrival at Fumba, you are given a briefing on Safari Blue. Then you board your dhow at around 9.30am and you’re off to explore the bay. Anchor is dropped at the Kwale sandbank, where sunshades are set up and guests have the chance to go snorkelling in the coral reefs, helped by the guides. After snorkelling, you’ll be offered refreshments to whet your appetite. This is followed by a visit to Kwale Island for lunch under the tamarind trees. Drinks are served throughout the day and the lunch is a buffet of grilled fish, lobster, calamari, chicken and rice, with a tasting of tropical fruits. After lunch, you can sunbathe, snooze or visit the beautiful mangrove lagoon. Swimming in the lagoon is dependent upon the nature of the tide. The crew sail in ‘ngalawa’, an indigenous double-outrigger canoe used by the local fishermen, is not for the faint-hearted. You leave at around 5:30pm with the lateen raised for leisurely voyage back to Fumba.
