After being picked up from your hotel in the morning, you will head towards the Muharraq Island for a tour of the old capital. Start your excursion by visiting the Shaikh Isa Bin Ali House, the residence of current king’s great-great-grandfather. A beautiful specimen of the 19th century of Gulf Islamic architecture, the house has four different wings adorned with carved wooden doors and perforated gypsum panels. Next, you head to Shaikh Ebrahim Centre, a new building boasting traditional architecture, built on a plot of land that belonged to the house of an intellectual named Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. The building hosts a series of rotating lectures, exhibitions and recitals by prominent writers, philosophers and artists from all over the world. Your next stop will be the stunning Kurar House where Bahraini ladies practise the art of Kurar, an embroidery form that uses a golden thread. Spend some time at the leafy courtyard surrounded by rooms displaying handmade garments and watch women wielding needle and thread in a room. End the day by visiting the Muharraq Souq, popular for its sweets, especially halwa which is a sticky sweetmeat still made in the traditional way in enormous copper pots. You may also want to savour a few delicacies at Hussein Mohamed Showaiter Sweets before you call it a day.
