best time to travel

Do you have a holiday destination in mind, but you're not sure when is the optimum time to visit? Or perhaps you know when you'd like to travel but you need some inspiration about where to go. Below is a month-by-month guide to some of our most popular destinations, with advice on weather, cultural events and avoiding peak-season prices.

January

Cape Town
Cape Town

In January, South Africa’s summer will be in full swing, so you can expect dry, sunny days with temperatures rarely falling below 21°C or exceeding 29°C. This makes it an ideal month for exploring the Cape Provinces, including the picturesque Garden Route and the foodie haven of the Winelands, both easily reached from Cape Town.

Manila
Manila

Planning a trip to the Philippines? In January, the rainy season will have long since passed, slightly lower temperatures make it easier to explore, and the country’s islands and remote areas are fully accessible. Festivals play a big role in Filipino culture, and it’s worth timing your visit to catch one of the major events. Mardi-gras-style celebrations in January include the religious festival of Sinulog in Cebu and the jubilant street dancing of Ati-Atihan in Kalibo.

February

Dhaka
Dhaka

Visit Dhaka in February and you can enjoy warm, pleasant temperatures and low rainfall – ideal for exploring the city’s offerings without having to contest with stifling heat or heavy rain. The tropical climate here means that from March onwards, temperatures begin to soar and you’ll start to feel the humidity.

Islamabad
Islamabad

Visit Islamabad in February and it will be the tail-end of winter, with spring just around the corner. A subtropical climate in northern Pakistan means that this time of year is ideal for visiting, with generally pleasant weather conditions all-round. You’ll also avoid the height of the peak travel period, so it’s less likely to be very busy.

March

Dubai
Dubai

In March, the weather is just about perfect in Dubai – it will be deliciously warm, but you’ll avoid the peak summer heat, making it ideal weather for sunbathing, swimming, golfing and water sports. The Dubai World Cup is held annually on the last Saturday of March; billed as the world’s richest horse race, it features thoroughbreds from around the world and is one of the city’s biggest social events.

Cancun
Cancun

The best time to enjoy the fabulous shores of Mexico’s Caribbean coast is between December and March, when the weather is most settled. March is the middle of Cancun’s dry season, when it starts to heat up nicely but rainfall remains low. You can expect average temperatures of 26°C – perfect for enjoying the beach and exploring Mayan temples.

April

Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi

The spring months of April and May are a wonderful time to visit Abu Dhabi. The weather is pleasantly hot and you’ll avoid the peak winter season (December to March), meaning it’s less crowded and hotel rates begin to dip. In April, the average daytime temperature is 27°C, with highs of 33°C. The Arabian Gulf will be a toasty 25°C, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. In addition, the emirate’s springtime events calendar features several cultural festivals and sporting events.

Delhi
Delhi

If you don’t mind high temperatures, travelling to Delhi in April can be excellent value. Air fares and hotel rates can be considerably lower after the popular tourist months of February and March, and parts of the city are likely to be a bit less busy. If you plan to go sightseeing, we recommend making excursions in the morning and early evening to avoid the midday heat.

May

Lahore
Lahore

Although temperatures can start getting very high in May, it is usually a dry month in Lahore and humidity levels are at their lowest. So, if you like the heat, travelling in May can be a good month to take advantage of off-peak travel fares.

Las Vegas
Las Vegas

The spring shoulder season is the perfect time to visit Las Vegas. In May you can expect lower prices, smaller crowds and moderate weather. The desert sun will be slightly cooler, so you can comfortably enjoy everything the city has to offer and make daytrips outside the city limits. The pools will be open, the Spring Break folks will have left, but the summer crowds will not yet have arrived.

June

Denpasar
Denpasar

June is one of the best months for a Bali beach escape. Just before the busy high season, you can expect less crowds but can still enjoy idyllic weather conditions, with constant sunshine and a wonderfully warm average of 27°C. The annual Bali Arts Festival is a month-long celebration that usually starts in the second week of June; one of the island’s biggest events, the festival showcases the best of Balinese and Indonesian culture including music and dance performances, art exhibitions and grand processions.

New York
New York

New York City is a fabulous year-round destination; however, all things considered, June might be the best month to visit. Summer is just getting started, Central Park is in bloom, and the city is buzzing with activities and events. It’s less crowded and less humid than the mid-summer months of July and August – perfect for long days of full-on sightseeing.

July

Nairobi
Nairobi

Kenya’s dry season lasts from late June to October. These are the best months for going out on safari; wildlife is easier to spot because the bush is thin and animals gather around waterholes. July is an ideal month to visit because the Great Migration of wildebeest is usually underway in the Maasai Mara, but there aren’t too many tourists – meaning great game viewing without the crowds.

Toronto
Toronto

July is typically the warmest month in Toronto, ideal for enjoying the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods, green spaces and beautiful beaches. It’s also the month when the city comes alive with festivals, including Carnivale and the Canadian National Exhibition. For those who love the great outdoors, summer is the optimum season for exploring Canada’s epic national parks and hiking trails.

August

Johannesburg
Johannesburg

August is the middle of the dry season, so it’s the perfect time for wildlife viewing in South Africa’s game reserves and national parks. Grass is low, visibility is good and animals can be seen congregating around watering holes. Another perk about travelling to Johannesburg in August is that the airfares are considerably cheaper than in the peak summer season (December to February).

Dar Es Salaam
Dar Es Salaam

The best time to visit Tanzania for wildlife viewing is between July and October, when the country is at its driest and the foliage of the national parks is sparse. August is an ideal month to travel if you want to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration crossing Tanzania’s rivers. It’s a popular time to visit, so be aware that the national parks can become quite busy, particularly the Serengeti.

September

Melbourne
Melbourne

September is the beginning of spring Down Under, which means the weather is pleasant, the crowds are moderate, and airfares are lower than during the peak summer months. It’s the perfect month for enjoying all that the city has to offer, particularly outdoor activities that may be a bit less enjoyable when the summer heat and crowds set in.

Sydney
Sydney

Similar to Melbourne, if you visit Sydney in the shoulder season of September to November, you can take advantage of comfortable temperatures, manageable tourist crowds and lower hotel and airline prices. As the weather begins to warm up in September, Sydney gears up to host a number of festivals and adventurous outdoor activities such as skydiving and surfing.

October

Orlando
Orlando

There are several reasons why October is a great month for taking the family to Orlando, Florida: the weather is still warm, but you’ll avoid the stifling temperatures and humidity of the summer months; the theme parks and waterparks are generally less crowded; many of the parks host Halloween-themed events and will be decorated for the season; and you’ll often get great deals on accommodation near Disney World.

Kathmandu
Kathmandu

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Nepal is between October and December. Travel to Kathmandu in October and you can expect dry weather, beautiful clear skies and incredible views – ideal conditions for hiking and trekking. September to November is considered ‘festival season’, so it’s also a great time to discover the local culture.

November

Mumbai
Mumbai

The winter months of October to February are ideal for visiting Mumbai, when humidity is low and conditions are ideal for exploring the city. In November, light coastal winds help temperatures hover comfortably around the high twenties and low thirties.

Karachi
Karachi

The best time to visit Karachi is between November and March, when conditions are dry and the average temperature is 23°C, with highs of 31°C. Travel in November and you can avoid the peak prices for flights and hotels, from January to March.

Auckland
Auckland

Late in the spring shoulder season (September to November) is an ideal time to enjoy the spectacular landscapes of New Zealand. Peak tourist season begins in December, so travel in November to avoid the large crowds and high fares.

December

Bangkok
Bangkok

Bangkok’s tropical climate makes it warm and humid throughout the year. Travel between November and February, the driest months, to avoid the high humidity that begins in March. Arrive late November or early December to enjoy the city before the large holiday crowds arrive. Christmas and New Year are celebrated with gusto in Bangkok, so staying over the holiday season is tremendous fun.

Phuket
Phuket

Travel to Phuket in December and you can expect blissfully hot days with balmy evenings. Humidity is at its lowest this month, so you can enjoy Phuket’s wonderful beaches and cultural sites in optimum conditions. It’s a particularly good time of year for swimming in the Andaman Sea, with water temperatures an inviting 29°C.
